First Evaluation

Having looked at the available newspaper jobs in my area. I lack: articles published in a high school or college publication (in the last 3 years), and experience with QuarkExpress.
Suggestions from my friends that are more involved in journalism include: starting this blog, beginning with review articles, and sending out query letters to publications.

My own preference is for science journalism.

So, my goals are to post an article on this blog twice a week (Mondays and Fridays), to read books on journalism and science journalism in particular, to study the AP Style Guide, to gain QuarkExpress experience and to learn the details on journalism politics (i.e. Do I properly understand plagiarism laws? etc.).

Long term goals include an internship or job at a newspaper or magazine.

Also, I will evaluate my progress at attaining my goals once a week. (Wednesdays)

The Beginning

Welcome. My name is Whalen, or Michelle Whalen if you prefer. (pronounced way-lin) I have started this blogspot because at the age of 22, having graduated college, I decided I'd like to be a journalist. So, this is a space where I can publish my first articles. Also, I will document other skills that I lack and my progress at attaining them.
